Culminating Show, Fulbright US Scholarship and Artist's residency in Euljiro, Seoul (2023- 24)

"If you can draw, they can make anything—even a tank!" That was the motto back then. I worked out of an artist residency in Euljiro, a nearly extinct manufacturing district near downtown Seoul. Thanks to the Fulbright Scholarship, I had a second chance to live and work in Seoul after 32 years since moving to the U.S. Each day, I wandered through a maze of machine shops, welders, and CNC cutters, where my art took shape organically through collaboration with the experts who spent their entire trade lives in this district. Soon, however, these shops will be pushed out due to real estate redevelopment. I wonder if they feel as I do—displaced, disconnected, with no home left to return to, only memories. My culminating solo exhibition in Seoul was centered on my personal diaspora and is the result of working with the artisans of this area. I honor them not only for bringing my drawings to life but for turning my ideas and dreams into reality.
